What is it about New Year’s morning that makes us feel like we can suddenly take on the world? Reach our highest potential? Chase our dreams? Well, that’s because we have the power to do all three!!

Really, New Year’s Day is just another day. There is no magical electric pulse that strikes us at 12:01… and yet the belief in ourselves we suddenly inherit on any January 1st yields so much power. Imagine what would happen if you carried that New Year’s electricity with you every day of the year! If every day, you were fueled with the full faith to achieve your full potential.

Well, you don’t have to imagine it any longer. We’ve heard phrases like “mind over matter” or “perception is reality.” These aren’t baseless mantras – they’re concepts backed by neuroscience. As a Stanford study reveals, we think we see the world for what it really is, but reality is filled with lots of uncomfortable uncertainty. As Neuroscientist Susana Martinez-Conde explains, “The ambiguity is going to be resolved one way or another, and sometimes in a way that does not match reality [but] our brains don’t always tell us the difference.” We fill in those reality gaps with illusions which Martinez-Conde calls, “the basis of superstition, the basis of magical thinking.” These illusions become our reality. If you fill in the gaps with self doubt, you are leaning into superstition. If you fill those gaps with hope, you are employing the power of magical thinking.

It is that magical thinking that makes us feel invincible at the cusp of the 10 second countdown on January 1st. And the only element of nature responsible for that invincibility is your faith in yourself. We all have that inner voice pushing us to unlock our ideal self – our dream life. We all have a go-getter inside of us waiting to be woken up. This is the time to GO GET HER! And work towards your full potential. Your ToPS self! (See what I did there 😉)
