When it comes to building a presentation, I often have leaders with years of wisdom and ideas come to me, saying “I don’t even know where to start.”

As eager and excited as we get to dive in and help them start building out their speaker brand, message, keynote, or presentation, my team and I know there is only one place to start – the audience.

As speakers, part of what we do functions to ensure the audience feels successful and feels they received value.

The best way to guarantee you achieve this as a speaker is to know what your audience needs not only in pursuing their purpose, but also how your message supports them in that.

Imagine you are doing a presentation on leadership skills. If you have been hired to do that presentation for high school students who are going into the world of politics, your presentation is going to be very different than if you are presenting to global leaders on the AI forefront. Your presentation is never one size fits all.

If you don’t take the time to consider your audience, you run the risk of your speech being too generic, because it’s trying to fit everyone in every situation.

Once you understand the ideal audience for your message, you can then select the parts of your content you feel would work best for them and give them the information and insights to create impact.

It’s a phenomenal feeling to be in front of a group of people knowing you’ve done the research to understand what they need and put in the right effort to ensure your expertise and zone of genius answer to that need. You can FEEL the magic in the room when the two are aligned.
