The One Thing You Need to be Successful in Starting A Business

Inspired by the world

It’s terrifying doing your own thing.

There is a lot of risk involved. Are you going to make ends meet? Do I have to live on Top Ramen? Do they even still make Top Ramen?

You may have the desire to build your own business but you may not feel you have the know how to do it. I want to tell you the one thing that you must have that will help you be successful.

Without it, your goals for success will be far harder to reach.

The one thing you need is the ability and passion to learn. If you have that passion to learn and understand that you don’t know everything but that you have the capacity to learn anything, then you can do it!

And before you say, “Of course I have passion and of course I can learn”, stop and ask how true that statement is.  This is a moment where you need to be blunt with yourself.  No rose-colored glasses here.  How open to learning are you, really? Most people will say that they love to learn, but it’s not always true. They love the idea of learning, but not the work of it.

Let me give you an example. I have worked for many start ups/ small businesses including my own. They have all been in different worlds. I have been in technology both hardware and software, corporate staffing/recruiter, green energy, accounting technology, video games and so many other ones.

The one thing they all had in common, was that I didn’t know anything in the field when I first started each one of them. However, when I started my own business in retail with a video game store, I studied like crazy. I read non-stop. I played the games (I’m horrible at first person shooters btw.)

I took my event and marketing experience though and kicked butt, earning an award in the franchise for 1 Gorilla Marketing. Then, I was asked to be on the Franchisee Advisory Board to help all of the West Coast stores.

But when I started I knew nothing about video games.  And I knew that I knew nothing.

I also worked for a company that taught accounting professionals about technology and best practices. Believe me, I knew even less about accounting professionals than I did video games.

So I submerged myself into the world of accounting and all of the SMB technology that was in our ecosystem.  Nights. Weekends.  Lunch breaks. The DMV line. You name it, I breathed in the world of accounting and what the people in that audience needed and what I could help them achieve.  Within two years, I was named one of the Most Powerful Women in Accounting by CPA Practice Advisor.

You should check out her awesome interview here. Oh yeah, and she was on the cover of the magazine, too.

Yes, you need capital.

Yes, you need to know what type of licenses you need.

Yes, you need to know marketing.

Yes, you need to understand what your goals are and how you are going to generate revenue.

However, if you are willing to learn—you can learn how to do all of that.

As long as you’re ready and willing to recognize what you don’t learn and that you can’t learn it all in one sitting.  Nope.  That single YouTube video you watched  isn’t going to be enough.

There are so many resources out there for you. So start writing down those business ideas down. Look into what you need to learn and prioritize what’s first.
